China has reclaimed the top position in the global supercomputing race, with its domestically built LineShine system surpassing the United States’ El Capitan, according to the latest TOP500 rankings reported by CNN.
The report said LineShine, located at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, achieved computing speeds roughly 20% higher than El Capitan, which is housed at a U.S. national laboratory in California.
The ranking marks the first time since 2017 that China has led the list of the world's most powerful supercomputers.
Notably, LineShine relies entirely on domestically developed CPUs and memory technologies rather than advanced GPUs, access to which has been restricted by U.S. export controls.
However, experts cautioned that TOP500 rankings primarily measure traditional scientific computing performance and do not necessarily reflect leadership in artificial intelligence infrastructure or capabilities. The report noted that many advanced AI systems developed by American technology firms are not included in the rankings.
