Chipotle Mexican Grill has removed jalapeños from its restaurants in Minnesota after identifying the peppers as a possible source of a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 110 people.
According to the report, the company acted after its ingredient traceability system linked jalapeños from a common supply lot to the ongoing investigation.
The report said Chipotle is working closely with public health authorities to determine whether the ingredient is responsible for the outbreak.
Company spokesperson Laurie Schalow said the precautionary removal was based on internal traceability data while the investigation continues.
The report said Chipotle's shares fell about 7 percent following the announcement, reflecting investor concerns over the company's food safety record.
Health officials also stressed that the Salmonella investigation is separate from the ongoing Cyclospora outbreak and that there is no evidence linking the two incidents.
