U.S. health officials have linked a multi-state Salmonella outbreak to recalled eggs, prompting the voluntary recall of nearly 1.6 million cartons, or about 19 million eggs, by Indiana-based Midwest Poultry Services.
According to the report, 98 people across 17 states fell ill between November and June, with 26 requiring hospital treatment, though no deaths have been reported.
Consumers have been advised to check their cartons carefully and either dispose of the affected eggs or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
Investigators believe Midwest Poultry Services is a likely source of the Salmonella enteritidis outbreak, although officials said the recalled products do not account for every reported illness.
According to the report, authorities are continuing to investigate additional sources while also responding to a separate cyclospora outbreak affecting multiple states.
