The United Nations warned on October 27 that current national climate pledges would reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by only 6% by 2035, far below the estimated 60% reduction needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
The assessment draws on submissions from 154 countries, representing 71% of global emissions. Even if countries fully implement their plans and meet conditional targets, emissions reductions would reach just 9%.
The report also factors in the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement under President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, global climate finance averaged $1.9 trillion annually in 2023 and 2024, a 32% increase. However, the UN warned that progress remains insufficient to meet the scale of the climate challenge.
