As the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, turns 90, he is about to share details about his succession in a move that could provoke China.

The Dalai Lama, born Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, into a farming family in what is now Qinghai province, was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at just two years old.

Since fleeing Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule, he has lived in exile in India, continuing to lead the Tibetan spiritual community from abroad.

The Dalai Lama has stated that his successor will be born outside China and has urged his followers to reject anyone appointed by Beijing.

China, however, views the Dalai Lama as a separatist and insists it will determine his successor.
