Miami voters elected Democrat Eileen Higgins as mayor, breaking nearly three decades of Republican leadership in the city. Higgins won the runoff with 59% of the vote, defeating Republican Emilio Gonzalez, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. She also becomes the first woman to hold the office.

Higgins told supporters Miami had “chosen competence over chaos” and pledged to focus on immigration, affordable housing and broader inclusion.

Throughout the campaign, she contrasted her approach with Trump’s, calling his immigration enforcement “inhumane,” but said she would work with the administration where possible.

Her victory adds to a recent streak of Democratic wins in major contests during Trump’s second term.

Democrats scored statewide victories in Virginia and New Jersey, and flipped key races in New York City. Higgins succeeds outgoing Mayor Francis Suarez, who briefly sought the GOP presidential nomination.
