Doctor’s Nightmare Comes True After Bat Crawls Into Her Mouth

A Virginia doctor had a terrifying wake-up call when she found a bat attempting to enter her mouth. Dr. Krista Edelman initially thought the animal was a field mouse from a dream before realizing it was a bat.

Edelman safely trapped the animal and had it tested for rabies. The test came back negative, meaning she did not need rabies vaccination.

Health officials nevertheless warn that bat encounters should be taken seriously because bites can be difficult to detect. Dr. Adam Landsee advised people to seek medical guidance after potential exposure, while Virginia public health veterinarian Dr. Julia Murphy recommends safely trapping bats for testing.

Local health departments can typically provide test results within about 48 hours.

Edelman, who lives in a nearly 100-year-old home, is now urging others to take precautions. Experts recommend contacting health authorities immediately if a bat is found inside a home, particularly when there may have been physical contact.
