The U.S. Justice Department plans to deploy about 1,000 monitors to polling locations during this year's midterm elections, potentially making it the largest such deployment under a Republican president.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the monitors will help ensure compliance with federal voting laws and protect voter access.

The DOJ's Civil Rights Division has historically sent staff to monitor elections for potential discrimination and voting rights violations, though deployments have typically involved dozens of personnel.

In 2024, the department monitored 86 jurisdictions across 27 states.

According to the report, the department plans to recruit volunteers from its own workforce, including U.S. Attorney's Offices nationwide.

Democrats have questioned the scale of the planned deployment amid concerns over Trump's comments about nationalizing elections.

The DOJ has not yet finalized deployment locations. Officials said recent monitoring efforts in Florida and Wyoming were limited to observing election procedures.
