U.S. federal agencies have warned that hackers are targeting Siemens programmable logic controllers used in water facilities, raising concerns about potential attacks on critical infrastructure.

The advisory was issued jointly by the National Security Agency, FBI, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and CISA.

The warning follows a series of cyber incidents affecting local water systems across several states.

According to the advisory, attackers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to lower the technical expertise needed to develop cyber exploits.

Successful attacks could disrupt water-treatment processes, create safety risks or damage equipment.

Minnesota reported at least 30 water-related cyber incidents on July 26 and 27. CISA has previously warned about Iranian-affiliated hackers targeting similar industrial devices.

The alert comes amid continued scrutiny of vulnerabilities in U.S. water infrastructure and growing concerns over foreign cyber threats.
