FBI Director Kash Patel has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic magazine and journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick over an article alleging he abuses alcohol.
Patel filed the suit Monday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., days after vowing legal action over the piece published Friday. The complaint describes the article as a "sweeping, malicious, and defamatory hit piece" designed to damage his reputation and force him out of office.

According to the lawsuit, The Atlantic and Fitzpatrick published the article "with actual malice," despite being warned hours before publication that the core allegations were "categorically false."
Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, in a statement reported by CNBC, said the magazine stands by its reporting.
Patel's legal team argues that while criticism of FBI leadership is fair game, publishing fabricated claims crosses a legal line.
