The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved bemotrizinol as a sunscreen active ingredient, marking the first addition to the agency’s list of permitted sunscreen filters in more than two decades.
The decision follows a review of extensive safety and efficacy data gathered from international markets, particularly Europe, where bemotrizinol has been widely used for years.
The ingredient provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation and is known for its ability to remain stable when exposed to sunlight.
The ingredient will initially be marketed by DSM-Firmenich under the brand name Parsol Shield.
The company will retain exclusive rights to the filter for 18 months before it becomes available to other manufacturers.
Supporters argue the move will give consumers access to more advanced sun protection technologies already available in many other countries.
