Michigan has recorded more than 8,100 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, making it the hardest-hit state in a nine-state foodborne outbreak, according to Reuters.
The report said the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed 8,176 infections, including 160 hospitalizations.
Taylor Farms has removed lettuce sourced from central Mexico, and Taco Bell has stopped using the affected supplier nationwide.
According to Reuters, Michigan's response has been slowed by staffing shortages after the Trump administration canceled pandemic-era federal grants, leading to reductions in infectious disease and county health personnel. Local health departments have reassigned staff and recruited volunteers to manage case investigations.
The report said officials believe the outbreak may continue to grow, although infection trends appear to be stabilizing.
