A Philippine Navy sailor was injured during a confrontation with China Coast Guard personnel near Ayungin Shoal in the South China Sea, according to Philippine authorities.
According to the report, the sailor sustained head injuries after being struck with a wooden baton while conducting a mission near the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded Philippine military outpost located within the country's claimed exclusive economic zone.
Philippine officials condemned the encounter as unlawful and pledged to continue maritime operations despite the confrontation.
According to the report, the incident highlights the continuing dispute over Ayungin Shoal, where China continues to assert territorial claims despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that rejected the legal basis for many of Beijing's claims in the South China Sea.
