The Five Eyes intelligence alliance has issued a rare joint warning alleging that Chinese military intelligence services are using online job platforms and professional networking websites to recruit individuals with access to sensitive government and defense information.
According to the warning, intelligence operatives allegedly pose as private consulting firms, think tanks, or recruitment agencies to attract foreign policy experts, defense analysts, military personnel, and government employees.
The alliance said these efforts increasingly rely on professional networking platforms, including LinkedIn, to identify and approach potential targets.

Officials reported that recruits are often offered payments ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars for reports or research assignments, with some compensation reportedly made through cryptocurrency.
The warning stated that such activities have, in some cases, resulted in criminal prosecutions, job terminations, and the loss of security clearances among individuals in Five Eyes countries.
The Five Eyes partnership, comprising the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, described the activity as a growing security concern.
Beijing has rejected the allegations, characterizing them as fabricated and politically motivated. The warning highlights increasing concerns among Western intelligence agencies about foreign influence and espionage efforts conducted through digital platforms.
