Florida authorities have charged 10 people following a four-year undercover investigation into an alleged illegal commercial fishing operation that investigators say poached about 23,000 pounds of fish and sold protected sea turtles.

The investigation began in May 2022 after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission received complaints about reef fish poaching. Investigators said undercover officers were approached by a suspect offering illegally harvested seafood for sale.

Authorities allege the operation generated more than $150,000 through illegal seafood sales, including fish, shrimp and sea turtles.

Investigators said suspects attempted to evade reporting requirements by conducting transactions at night along docks, from private residences and through boat-to-boat exchanges.

The 10 defendants face felony racketeering and conspiracy charges. Officials said potential prison sentences range from 65 to 75 years. The case will be prosecuted in Pinellas County. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said he plans to seek tougher penalties for wildlife poaching.
