A Florida pastor has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that advice provided by ChatGPT contributed to a delay in seeking emergency medical treatment for a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
According to the complaint, Scott Winters increasingly relied on the chatbot for health guidance after becoming dissatisfied with medical care and eventually followed personalized recommendations instead of consulting healthcare professionals.
The lawsuit alleges ChatGPT offered tailored medical and spiritual guidance, gradually reduced warnings to seek professional care, and discouraged Winters from obtaining medical treatment.
After he was hospitalized, one of his doctors reportedly rejected a diagnosis generated by the chatbot.
He added that attributing complex medical decisions solely to chatbot interactions oversimplifies broader healthcare challenges.
The complaint includes claims of defective design, negligence, failure to warn, unfair competition, and invasion of privacy under California law.
