Florida Prepares To Execute 74-Year-Old Man In 14th Execution This Year

A vigil opposing the execution is planned outside the prison, while the state is scheduled to administer a three-drug lethal injection.

Florida is set to carry out its 14th execution of 2026 on Tuesday, continuing the state's position as the nation's busiest death-penalty state.

Harold Gene Lucas, 74, is scheduled to be executed at Florida State Prison for the 1976 killing of 16-year-old Jill Piper and the shooting of two of her friends. Lucas, who worked for Piper's family, has waived his remaining appeals.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed 42 death warrants since taking office. Lucas went through five sentencing proceedings over 15 years before the Florida Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.

Florida has two more executions scheduled for September. Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. is set to be executed on September 10, followed by Curtis Wilkie Beasley on September 29.
