In a social media post from Switzerland, Trump said he would not support reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) unless Congress also passed his voter ID proposal, the SAVE AMERICA Act.

Trump also announced that the Senate hearing for Jay Clayton, his nominee for director of national intelligence, should be halted. He said acting intelligence chief Bill Pulte would remain in the position for now.

The move disrupted weeks of negotiations aimed at replacing Pulte with Clayton and easing tensions surrounding the expired surveillance law. CNN reported that Senate Republican leaders were caught off guard and sought clarification from the White House.

Democrats strongly criticized the development, arguing that national security legislation should not be tied to unrelated political demands. The dispute has left the future of both Clayton’s nomination and FISA reauthorization uncertain.
