Guterres Urges Stronger AI Regulation And Global Action To End Wars

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres used his final General Assembly address to urge world leaders to strengthen oversight of artificial intelligence, end ongoing wars and accelerate action on climate change.

He also called for reforms to international institutions, warning that global cooperation is being weakened by deepening divisions and growing geopolitical tensions.

Guterres highlighted the challenges facing the United Nations as major conflicts continue and some prominent world leaders were absent from the diplomatic gathering.

He argued that international institutions must adapt to a rapidly changing world and become more effective in addressing global crises.

His speech also drew sustained applause when he defended a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians and called for greater accountability over climate-related damage. Guterres urged governments to ensure that those responsible for pollution bear more of its costs.

The address marked his final appearance before the General Assembly as UN secretary-general, giving him an opportunity to reiterate his priorities on peace, climate action, technology governance and institutional reform.
