A powerful heat dome is expected to bring dangerously high temperatures across parts of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with highs ranging from 95 to 105 degrees through early next week.
According to the report, meteorologists warn the weather pattern could persist for more than a week and set dozens of local temperature records.
The report said climate scientist Daniel Swain compared the heat dome to a "pot lid" that traps hot air while preventing cooler air and rainfall from entering the region.
According to the report, about 24 million people are expected to experience extreme heat across a 52,000-square-kilometer area.
The National Weather Service forecasts that more than 90 local temperature records could be tied or broken by Wednesday as the heat intensifies across the Plains and Midwest.
