At least 80 combatants were reportedly killed in fighting between Iran-backed Houthi forces and Saudi-backed government troops near Yemen’s Red Sea coast, according to sources cited by AFP.

The clashes occurred in Taiz province, where fighting has intensified following a Houthi offensive against Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Houthi military sources said 55 government-aligned fighters were killed over 24 hours, while government sources reported 26 deaths among their forces.

The Houthis have seized Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, including areas near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major shipping chokepoint connecting the Red Sea with global trade routes. The waterway is particularly important for energy shipments from the region.

Fighting is continuing across several fronts around Taiz, including elevated areas overlooking recently captured coastal territory. However, the Houthis have not taken Taiz city, Yemen’s third-largest urban center.

UN Yemen envoy Hans Grunberg expressed concern over the escalation, warning that the Houthi operations pose serious risks to civilians.
