A historic, hand-drawn map of the Mason-Dixon Line is heading to auction in a livestreamed event hosted by Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina. The auction house estimates it could sell for between $800,000 and $1.2 million.
Surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon originally mapped the boundary to resolve a land dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania.
In 1982, publisher Malcolm S. Forbes purchased the map for $360,000, outbidding the Library of Congress. The institution currently lacks the budget to compete for it again.
Brunk Auctions vice president Lauren Brunk expressed hope that a patriotic buyer would acquire the historic document and donate it to the Library of Congress, preserving its place in American history.
