President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran pay reparations for what he described as decades of damage, adding a new obstacle to efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said Monday that compensation could cover US military casualties and families of protesters killed during unrest in Iran. He directed officials to include the demand in future negotiations.
According to the report, Tehran maintains that Hormuz will not fully reopen until its conditions are met. Trump, meanwhile, said the US Navy has cleared mines from the waterway and claimed Washington now controls access.
Oil prices rose amid the uncertainty, with Brent crude briefly approaching $90 a barrel.
A maritime security agency also reported an incident involving a tanker and military forces near the Strait of Hormuz.
