Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has nearly ground to a halt as a 60-day US-Iran ceasefire approaches its Monday expiry, with no formal negotiations underway.
Only five cargo vessels crossed the strategic waterway Saturday, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters. No crossings were recorded Sunday, compared with 31 vessels the previous weekend. Overall traffic is down about 90% from pre-war levels.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there were currently no direct negotiations with Washington, with Qatar and Pakistan only relaying messages.
President Donald Trump has claimed the US could eventually control the waterway. Iran, however, insists the Strait remains under its authority and can be opened or closed only by Tehran.
