Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to appear before the House Oversight Committee for a closed-door interview as lawmakers continue examining connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to CNN, the committee requested Gates’ voluntary cooperation after the Justice Department released millions of pages of Epstein-related records. Lawmakers are expected to question Gates about the extent of his relationship with Epstein and any knowledge he may have had of Epstein’s activities.
The report said some of the newly released files include draft emails apparently written by Epstein in 2013 that contain graphic allegations involving Gates. However, the allegations remain unverified and uncorroborated. There is no indication the messages were ever sent, and Gates has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing.
Gates has strongly denied the claims. A spokesperson previously described the allegations as false and said Gates deeply regrets meeting Epstein. Gates has repeatedly stated that he never visited Epstein’s private island, never attended parties with him, and had no involvement in illegal conduct.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer said the committee is not accusing Gates of wrongdoing but wants answers about his interactions with Epstein after Epstein’s 2008 conviction. Democrats on the panel have also questioned why Gates maintained contact with Epstein despite his criminal history.
According to the report, Justice Department records contain hundreds of references to Gates, including emails about meetings, meals and proposed calls. The committee says Wednesday’s interview is part of a broader effort to understand Epstein’s network and determine whether additional information should be made public.
