Chinese President Xi Jinping used his first visit to North Korea in seven years to outline a broader vision for deeper cooperation with Kim Jong Un’s government, according to a CNN analysis.
The report said Xi’s remarks appeared more concrete than those made during his 2019 visit. Notably, he did not publicly repeat Beijing’s past calls for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a shift that analysts say could benefit North Korea.
According to the analysis, the visit comes as China seeks to strengthen its regional influence amid strategic competition with the United States and North Korea’s growing ties with Russia.
Beijing also appears keen to reassert itself as Pyongyang’s primary diplomatic and economic partner after Moscow expanded its relationship with Kim’s government.
At the same time, experts noted that Beijing is unlikely to give Pyongyang unconditional backing and still wants stability on the Korean Peninsula.
