Researchers are testing an experimental vaccine designed to train the immune system to target precancerous cells before pancreatic cancer develops.
According to the report, scientists at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins enrolled 20 people with an inherited risk of pancreatic cancer in an early-stage clinical trial focused on mutations in the KRAS gene.
The report said KRAS mutations are responsible for more than 90 percent of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas, making them a key target for preventive therapies. The vaccine aims to stimulate the body's immune system to recognise and attack abnormal cells before they become cancerous.
According to the report, 18 of the 20 participants developed a strong KRAS-specific T-cell immune response, with no serious safety concerns reported during the trial.
The report said a larger ongoing study will examine whether the vaccine-generated immune cells can reach precancerous tissue and ultimately prevent pancreatic cancer from developing.
