The American Red Cross has declared a national blood supply crisis after donations fell to their lowest summer levels in four years, marking only the second such declaration in the organization's history.

According to the Red Cross, the shortage has forced it to limit distributions of Type O blood to hospitals.

The report said extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses have reduced donor turnout, while hospital demand continues to exceed available blood supplies.

To boost donations, the Red Cross is offering incentives to eligible donors, including a Fandango movie ticket for donations made by July 31 and a $20 Amazon gift card for those who donate in August.

Officials urged eligible donors to schedule appointments as soon as possible, saying even a small increase in participation at each blood drive could help stabilize the nation's blood supply.
