India Condemns JD Vance’s ‘Indentured Servants’ Remark On Immigrants

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Vance’s terminology carried painful historical and colonial associations

US Vice President JD Vance

India has condemned US Vice President JD Vance’s remarks about foreign workers as “deeply offensive,” escalating tensions over the Trump administration’s restrictions on employment-based immigration.

Vance said companies should prioritize American workers and criticized businesses that lay off US employees while hiring foreign workers.

His comments came as the US Labor Department suspended Microsoft, Adobe and several major IT firms, including Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL and Cognizant, from the program used to seek permanent residency for H-1B employees.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Vance’s terminology carried painful historical and colonial associations. It defended Indian professionals as highly skilled contributors to the US economy and innovation sector. Indian officials also clarified that the measures would not invalidate existing H-1B visas or affect visa holders’ dependents.

Industry group NASSCOM said Indian technology companies have reduced their reliance on H-1B visas and expanded US hiring. TCS said its recent H-1B applications were in single digits and pledged to hire 15,000 more US workers over five years.
