The US is threatening to shut down all Iranian airlines from September 23 as Washington intensifies economic pressure on Tehran, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Meanwhile, the G7 condemned continued attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels against Yemen and Saudi Arabia and called for an end to strikes on civilian shipping. The Houthis have reportedly targeted locations near Riyadh and seized Yemen’s Perim Island, strengthening their position near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The strategic waterway provides an alternative route for oil shipments when the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted.
The UK has agreed to support Saudi Arabia with aerial refueling, while NATO Secretary Mark Rutte indicated European allies could discuss further assistance. President Donald Trump reportedly rejected a Saudi request for a US airstrike.
