Israel Election Deadlock Leaves Netanyahu Fighting To Stay In Power

Opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot’s camp could secure a majority with support from Arab parties Raam and the Joint List, which are projected to win 19 seats combined

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces an uncertain political future after election results left his Likud party as the largest parliamentary group but deprived his right-wing bloc of a majority, according to CNN. With 53 projected seats, the bloc falls short of the 61 needed to govern.

Opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot’s camp could secure a majority with support from Arab parties Raam and the Joint List, which are projected to win 19 seats combined. However, disagreements among opposition partners over cooperation with Arab lawmakers threaten that path.

CNN reported that Netanyahu’s allies have accused Arab parties of election misconduct, claims being examined by the Central Elections Committee. Opposition figures also fear a security escalation could delay efforts to form a new government.

President Isaac Herzog will consult elected parties before selecting the candidate most likely to command a majority. That candidate will receive 28 days, potentially extended by two weeks, to negotiate a governing coalition. If talks fail, Israel could face another election.
