Israel marked three years since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack with memorials, moments of silence and protests across more than 400 locations, according to CNN.

The assault killed more than 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in 251 hostages being taken to Gaza. Memorial events were held at communities affected by the attack, including the Nova festival site, where more than 370 people were killed and 44 abducted.

While official state ceremonies were held earlier, many anniversary events were organized by survivors and victims’ families. A central demand is for a state commission of inquiry into the security failures surrounding October 7. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted such calls.

The anniversary has also become a major political issue ahead of Israel’s October 27 election. Netanyahu’s opponents have intensified criticism, citing reports that Israel received warnings before the attack.

The commemoration comes as fighting continues in Gaza. Netanyahu said Israel would continue pursuing militants, while Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 74,000 Palestinian deaths since the war began.
