Texas state Rep. James Talarico defeated U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, according to a race call by the Associated Press. With about 60% of polling locations reporting early Wednesday, Talarico led with 53.2% of the vote while Crockett had 45.5%, according to results from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.
Speaking to supporters in Austin, Talarico said the victory showed his campaign was “shocking the nation.”
The win elevates Talarico’s national profile and sets up what is expected to be one of the year’s most expensive Senate contests. Democrats hope dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump could give them a rare opportunity in a traditionally Republican state.

Voting in Dallas County saw confusion after centralized voting centers were closed earlier this year. A Texas court extended polling hours, though the Texas Supreme Court later ruled ballots cast after 7 p.m. by voters not already in line must be separated.
Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994. Talarico will face the winner of the Republican runoff between Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
