A federal judge has declared a mistrial in the criminal case against Jonathan Rinderknecht, who was accused of starting the 2025 Palisades Fire, after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict following deliberations.

According to court proceedings, the jury remained deadlocked, with 10 jurors voting to acquit Rinderknecht and two supporting conviction on charges that included arson, malicious destruction by fire and setting timber on fire.

The impasse prevented the court from delivering a final verdict, resulting in the declaration of a mistrial.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said prosecutors intend to retry the case and will continue seeking convictions on all charges.

He maintained that the government believes the evidence supports the allegations against the defendant.

Defense attorney Steve Haney welcomed the outcome, arguing that the overwhelming majority of jurors favored acquittal and describing the vote as a strong indication that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

A new trial date is expected to be scheduled, allowing both sides to present their arguments again before a different jury.
