Billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin is giving Carnegie Mellon University $3 billion to support campuses in Pittsburgh and Miami, according to CNN.

The donation is the largest individual gift to a US higher education institution, surpassing Michael Bloomberg’s $1.8 billion contribution to Johns Hopkins in 2018. About $1 billion will go to CMU’s Pittsburgh campus, while $2 billion will fund a new Miami campus in Wynwood.

The Miami campus is expected to open in 2028 and will organize education around major challenges rather than traditional academic disciplines. Its focus areas will include health and biological research, national security, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing.

The gift comes as Griffin continues shifting his business interests toward South Florida. His hedge fund, Citadel, moved its global headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022.

Griffin has also criticized New York’s business environment. He recently said Citadel would expand its Miami presence following tensions with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani over proposed taxes.

CMU will rename its computer science school after Griffin.
