A Reno-Tahoe swim instructor was injured in a rare otter attack while swimming near Hidden Beach at Lake Tahoe on Sunday.

Lynette Bellin suffered multiple scratches and bite wounds across her body during what she described as a roughly five-minute struggle with the animal.

Bellin received 38 stitches and rabies shots after being treated at an emergency room, with 22 stitches required for injuries to her foot.

Kenzie Margiott of the Nevada Department of Wildlife said the local North American river otter population has grown over the past 15 years, potentially increasing the likelihood of territorial encounters. Wildlife officials were unable to capture the otter involved.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is working with Nevada State Parks to install warning signs encouraging visitors to keep their distance from wildlife. Despite the attack, Bellin said she plans to return to Lake Tahoe, although she intends to swim at a different location.
