Scientists have reported a potentially significant development in the search for dark matter after the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment detected an unusual particle interaction known as LZ230616.
LUX-ZEPLIN uses 10 tonnes of ultrapure liquid xenon located 1.5 kilometers underground to reduce interference from cosmic rays and other background signals.
Researchers described the event as a compelling hint, but stressed that it falls short of the five-sigma threshold required to claim a discovery.
Scientists say more data is needed to determine whether the signal is genuinely linked to dark matter.
The experiment will continue collecting data through 2028, while researchers plan to compare results with other major detectors, including XENON and PandaX. If confirmed, the finding could provide support for the long-standing Weakly Interacting Massive Particle theory.
