Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party swept three Canadian parliamentary special elections Monday, strengthening the government’s slim House of Commons majority and signaling continued public support, according to the BBC report.
The victories come as Carney has gained ground in opinion polls following his decision to end trade negotiations with the United States, calling Washington’s proposed terms unfair. Polling firm Abacus Data reported that both the government’s approval rating and Carney’s personal standing have improved.
The Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, continue to trail the Liberals by roughly 10 points in recent polling. The party has also lost several lawmakers to resignations and defections.
The results could give Carney greater political room as Canada confronts new US tariffs and mounting economic pressure, particularly in Quebec.
