On Monday, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reported that it had “encountered” 230,678 migrants illegally crossing into the country, the highest number ever recorded in October and the third highest in the nation’s history.
On Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas assured Congress that the border is secure and that “we are working day in and day out to enhance its security.”
The back-to-back events lead to a question: How many times can a Cabinet secretary blatantly lie to Congress before he gets brought up on charges?
Federal law, after all, makes it a crime to “knowingly and willfully” give “materially” false statements to Congress, even if you’re not under oath. The penalty includes fines and up to five years in prison, or up to eight if the lie involves international or domestic terrorism.
Mayorkas is a serial offender who deserves the eight-year beef.
In March 2021, he told the House Homeland Security Committee that “Our border is secure and our border is not open.”
That month, more than 173,000 crossed the “closed” border.
He went on to say that “I am spending time on the operational response to the situation at the border. That’s what I’m focused on.”
Over the following six months, almost 1.2 million illegals crossed the border.
In September 2021, Mayorkas told the same committee that “The border is secure. We’re executing our plan.”
In the 12 months following that claim, 2.4 million more crossed over.
In May of this year, he was once again before the Homeland Security Committee where he was asked: “Are you testifying as you sit here today that the Southwest border is secure?”
Mayorkas replied, “Yes, I am.” At the same hearing, he said DHS has “operational control of the southern border.”
The average number of illegal crossings each month since has topped 200,000.
All told, more than 4 million illegal immigrants have crossed Mayorkas’ “secure” border. While some are sent back, most are released into the U.S. on the promise that they will show up for an official hearing months or years down the road.
And that number, as incredible as it is, doesn’t count the “got aways” — those who avoid border patrol agents entirely — a number estimated to top 1 million since Biden took office. Among them were most assuredly those plotting acts of terrorism against America, which means that Mayorkas is essentially aiding and abetting terrorists.
Mayorkas’ flagrant lies go beyond the “secure” border.
An investigation by the Heritage Foundation turned up evidence that he flat-out lied when claiming that mounted border agents had whipped illegals on this side of the border.
After DHS refused an FOIA request to turn over documents related to that incident, the Heritage Foundation sued. And that uncovered an email from Mayorkas’ top press aid informing him that the photographers who took the pictures said the agents were using reins to control their horses, not whips to attack migrants. Hours later, Mayorkas publicly accused the agents of whipping migrants, and the agents spent more than a year being “investigated.”
And how has President Joe “I’ll always be straight with you” Biden responded to all this?
At a White House event in September, he praised Mayorkas for this “leadership” in “fixing the immigration system,” and then went on to attack Republicans for “playing politics with human beings” for the crime of exposing the depth of the border crisis.
“What they are doing is simply wrong,” Biden said.
Sorry Joe, but what Mayorkas is doing is simply wrong. Everyone knows it. And his lies are costing lives, as drug dealers, criminals, and other miscreants take advantage of the welcome mat.
But not one Democrat — nor the six Republicans who approved his nomination — will stand up to hold this lawbreaking liar accountable.
