Measles Surge Breaks US Record For Second Straight Year

The United States has recorded its highest number of measles cases in 35 years, marking a second consecutive year of record-breaking infections, according to CNN.

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows at least 2,318 cases have been reported so far in 2026, surpassing last year's total with several months still remaining.

The report said outbreaks that began in 2025 have continued into this year, while dozens of new clusters have emerged across the country. South Carolina experienced one of the largest outbreaks in decades, and new outbreaks have also expanded in states including Virginia and Pennsylvania.

According to the CDC, more than 90% of reported cases involve people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. Public health officials said controlling outbreaks requires extensive contact tracing, community outreach and vaccination campaigns.

The report added that health experts continue to stress vaccination as the most effective protection against measles and warn that communities with low immunization rates remain vulnerable to future outbreaks.
