Meta Platforms is facing a proposed $1.4 trillion in penalties as four U.S. states accuse the company of designing Facebook and Instagram to keep young users addicted while misleading the public about the platforms' safety.
According to the report, the penalty request will be considered during an August trial in California before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.
According to the report, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state intends to hold Meta fully accountable.
Separately, 29 states have also filed lawsuits alleging the company violated the Federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting children's data without proper consent.
Additional legal proceedings involving similar allegations are scheduled to begin in February.
