Michigan Reports Two Deaths In Growing Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Health officials are investigating lettuce and salad greens as possible sources of the outbreak, although previous outbreaks have been associated with a variety of fresh produce.

Michigan has reported two deaths linked to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak, with the total number of confirmed cases rising to 11,234 as of August 3, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Officials said both individuals had significant underlying health conditions.

The report said cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite.

Health officials are investigating lettuce and salad greens as possible sources of the outbreak, although previous outbreaks have been associated with a variety of fresh produce.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, confirmed cases have been identified in 34 states, with illnesses expected to continue increasing through the end of August. As of July 30, 193 patients had been hospitalized.

State health officials recommend buying whole heads of lettuce, thoroughly washing fresh produce under clean running water, and cooking leafy greens to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the risk of infection.

Anyone experiencing persistent gastrointestinal symptoms is advised to seek medical evaluation.
