Suspected cases of cyclosporiasis have surpassed 18,200 across the United States, making it the largest known outbreak of the gastrointestinal illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since May 1, the CDC has confirmed more than 6,700 domestically acquired cases, while over 11,500 additional reports remain under investigation.
The report said the outbreak has now been linked to nine states, with Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania recently added to the list.
Health officials are investigating iceberg lettuce imported from Mexico as the likely source, while maintaining that the U.S. food supply remains safe.
Every U.S. state has reported at least one case this year, although not all infections have been connected to the current outbreak.
