Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers has called for an end to the US tariff dispute with Canada, marking another public difference with President Donald Trump. In a new advertisement released October 7, Rogers said Canada is not an enemy and urged an end to what he called the “tariff war.”

Trump imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, with Michigan among the states affected by the trade measures. Rogers previously described the tariffs as necessary in August but has now called for them to be lifted.

Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has repeatedly criticized both Trump and Rogers over the tariff dispute. The Senate contest is among those being closely watched as Republicans and Democrats compete for control of the chamber.

Rogers also recently called for the Iran war to end quickly, another position that differs from Trump’s approach. The latest advertisement represents his second notable break with the president in recent weeks.
