The Trump administration has identified more than 500 unaccompanied migrant children in U.S. government custody for possible removal from the country, according to Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, as reported by CNN.

Wyden said the children have remained in custody for at least six months and do not have a parent, relative or legal guardian in the United States.

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., he urged the administration to halt any planned removals, arguing the effort raises serious due process concerns.

The Department of Health and Human Services rejected Wyden's claims, saying there are no plans to target the children. An HHS spokesperson said the administration is working to identify parents or legal guardians and ensure children are placed with properly vetted sponsors.

According to CNN, immigrant advocates warned that returning children to their home countries could expose them to the same dangers they originally fled. The report added that many of the identified minors are represented by legal counsel in ongoing immigration proceedings.
