NASA plans to support an uncrewed Boeing Starliner test flight to the International Space Station in December, while crewed missions have been delayed until 2028 as the spacecraft undergoes additional safety improvements.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency has reclassified Starliner’s 2024 test flight, which left astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams in space for months, as a “Type A mishap,” its most serious classification for incidents involving significant damage or loss of vehicle control.

SpaceX currently remains NASA’s only operational provider for crewed missions from the United States, with the agency recently purchasing three additional flights.

NASA says maintaining multiple U.S. crew-transportation options remains important as it prepares for future missions and works toward returning Starliner to crewed operations.
