NASA’s Perseverance rover has set a new record for driving distance on Mars, traveling 28.1 miles and surpassing the previous record held by the Opportunity rover, which covered 28.06 miles.
Since landing in Jezero Crater in February 2021, Perseverance has relied on AutoNav, an autonomous navigation system that handles more than 90% of its driving without direct human intervention. The rover can travel up to 1,351 feet during a single Martian day.
NASA has approved a mission extension through 2028. Perseverance will continue exploring Lac de Charmes and head toward Idubi to investigate potential evidence of ancient hydrothermal activity.
The mission aims to improve scientists’ understanding of Mars’ geological history and identify environments that may once have supported microbial life.
