The U.S. Navy has shifted from a search-and-rescue mission to a search-and-recovery operation for a Marine reported missing during training off the Southern California coast.
The decision was made late Friday after more than 43 hours of intensive search efforts failed to locate the service member.
In response, the Navy launched a large-scale search involving personnel from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force.
Search teams covered roughly 2,400 square miles of ocean using three surface vessels and 12 aircraft in an extensive effort to locate the missing Marine.
The Navy said the Marine's identity will not be released until at least 24 hours after family members have been notified, in accordance with military policy.
Officials expressed their condolences to the Marine's family and emphasized their continued support during the ongoing recovery mission.
