Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a report claiming he received a warning from the United Arab Emirates leader days before Hamas launched its October 7, 2023, attack.
According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the Emirati leader warned Netanyahu that Hamas was preparing a major assault. The report alleged that the warning was not passed to Israeli security officials.
The controversy comes ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, where former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is challenging Netanyahu. Bennett backed the report and accused Netanyahu of serious negligence.
Questions also remain over Netanyahu’s response after the attack began. His office has acknowledged that he was awakened at 6:27 a.m. but did not seek contact with Israel’s top general until later.
Netanyahu has rejected calls for a formal state inquiry.
