Nine States Report Growing Cyclospora Cases

A cyclospora outbreak linked to diarrheal illness has expanded to nine U.S. states, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official cited by CNN. Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania have joined Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia in the ongoing investigation.

The report said more than 12,000 cyclosporiasis cases have been reported across the affected states this summer, with Michigan accounting for the largest share. If investigators confirm the cases are connected, it could become one of the largest foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States in nearly 30 years.

According to CNN, patient interviews have pointed investigators toward iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico as the likely source of contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working with Mexican health authorities to determine how the contamination occurred.

The report added that Taylor Farms has recalled shredded lettuce distributed to restaurants, food service providers and retailers in 27 states while the investigation continues.
